Weekly Synopses! #4
Hello Everyone,
Another week has passed, and another synopsis is up and running. Hope everyone is keeping up with us, and most importantly, keeping up with your coursework… Only one more month to go before summer begins, and as you all know, we are preparing for our MTV event and Game Night!!! Of course, when we have a confirmed date and details, it will be posted on this website, Facebook, Twitter?, MySpace?, …what other websites people use these days… Anyhow, we do have an election coming up for ALPFA positions, which will be posted here, click me if you are interested! ***Deadline fast approaching!***
Our next person for our Weekly Synopses will be:
She is a former Vice President of ALPFA, working on her Bachelors of Arts in Accounting and Economics, and she currently works in the Accounting Department, which is why most of you viewers recognize her…
QC: Hello Nicole, thank you for taking the time to come down here and share with us your experiences. So, how was your experience like with ALPFA and the Convention?
Nicole: When I decided to come back to college, I knew that I had to be ahead of the game. One ALPFA event set the tone for my future decisions in regards to my academic and accounting career. I immediately was embraced by fellow students and professionals in the organization. Within the next few months, we worked together to make the trip to Phoenix, Arizona for the National Convention 2008. It was at this convention I learned the full dynamics of ALPFA and also learned that I had more potential than I ever gave myself credit for. The technical and educational workshops, the salsa competition-
QC: Definitely the salsa competition…
Nicole: Yes, and the career fair and interviews showed that professionals are just like me. Many of them never had the opportunity to meet with CEOs, VPs, other fields of public accounting when they were in college. I became more confident that I was capable of taking on my future profession while giving me the opportunity to learn about other fields of business that I never thought about before.
QC: Now, we know that you attended the Convention in 2009 as well. How did your experience with the 2008 Convention helped and/or changed your approach for the 2009 Convention?
Nicole: When I returned to the 2009 Convention in Boston, I went in with an improved energy and stronger leadership skills. The second time around I made sure to interact one-on-one with individuals and brand myself so that they knew who I was, since I already did my research on the companies in attendance.
QC: (Jotting this down…Interact one-on-one, Branding, Research…and some more research…)
Before we conclude this special evening, what would your advice be for those who are attending the upcoming Convention?
Nicole: My advice to those who planning to go in the future…RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH. ALPFA National and New York make endless opportunities to know which companies will be there. Be respectful, professional, and a sponge. You will learn so much from not only professionals, but students that attend college across the country. Have you resume checked over by more than one person, carry business cards, practice you elevator pitch in the mirror (google if you don’t know what that is). If you have any additional questions, I always welcome emails at-
(…90210 taking over our stage…)
QC: Unfortunately that was all the time we have, if you would like to contact Nicole, please contact us and we will transfer your request immediately. As you already know, it is very hectic at the Accounting Department, she is heading back to work with more students’ inquiries… I hope all of you were taking good notes, just the way you take notes in a classroom..or better…or at all…
***Stay tuned next week for our next candidate, thank you for reading!***

Weekly Synopses! #3
Good Evening Ladies and Gents,
As you already know, tomorrow is school (yahoo!!!), and we would like to push for another synopsis in order to maintain your interest in this wonderful opportunity. Without further ado, let’s all give a warm welcome to one of the IT twins! (The ones who made this website possible)
Jonathan Cifuentes
He is a Queens College graduate who majored in Computer Science. He is always exposed to IT wherever he goes, as for his future? You guessed it, it will be related to Tech. As of now, he is managing JK Design, and of course, ALPFA, and other businesses as well.
QC: Hello Jon! First, we would like to thank you and your brother’s dedications and efforts on this new and improved website. It is a great asset to ALPFA as a whole (and a great way to give the Director of IT (aka me) more work to do…), and we will ensure to use this website at its’ full capacity. At any event, tell us about your experience with the ALPFA National Convention.
Jon: Well as far back as I can recall, my first convention was in 2004 at Chicago. It was an experience that would change my life forever not just in the countless things i got to experience first-hand as an up and coming ALPFA member. I was able to see the work of many state chapters culminate into one event like the ALPFA convention. I’ve always said that ALPFA has helped kick-start my career, giving me challenges and lessons along the way. But when you enter those doors, schmooze with executives, and become immered in a world of resources right at your fingertips, you can’t help but to feel that you truly have the opportunity to make a difference in your life and quite possibly someone else’s as well. Some people come to network, to find a job, to do both, to do more-
QC: (definitely planning to do more…)
Jon: Yet in the end, I can truly say that in a span of just 4 days, anyone who attends will leave with a power and enthusiasm to get the job done..I call it, ALPFA’s reboot…because we all leave accomplished, renewed, and empowered. So everybody wins in some way or form.
QC: A win-win scenario, an interesting way to interpret this opportunity. Any suggestions and/or recommendations for students who are attending for their first time?
Jon: For students who are attending for their first time…where should I begin? First, bring plenty of resumes and business cards…you have no idea how cramped and expensive hotel business centers can get.
QC: (have to turn the printing switch on, like the way Ben Bernanke turn the printing switch on for money)
Jon: Next, learn the art of the snappy bio (see here: http://lifehacker.com/5327172/write-a-snappy-bio-line-for-yourself). When you’re at a career fair, recruiters will be talking to a lot of people so before exchanging smalltalk, it’s important to make your conversation ice breaker short and sweet. Once you get their attention, then you can reel them in with your general questions.
QC: (the art of the snappy bio…we have to master this!)
Jon: Next, vibrate your phone…remember that when pitching yourself to a recruiter, nothing kills a good vibe like a looped ring tone of Lady GaGa.
QC: (how did he know…)
Jon: Next, when bringing gadgets, extra batteries help…you never know.
QC: (batteries…AA, AAA, AAAA?, what else…)
Jon: And finally, be yourself, exercise positivity, and have fun! The convention’s well-known for it’s after-parties
QC: (time to head for the gym) “Well-known for it’s after-parties,” not only do we work hard, we party hard as well. Thank you for your creative insight, it seems like we lost track of time with your wonderful instructions; I am positive we will refer to this guide wherever we may go…(need to introduce myself to my next door strangers, snappy bio!)
***Stay tuned next week for our next candidate, thank you for reading!***

Weekly Synopses! #2
Hello New & Returning Viewers,
As you know, we will be posting synopses from students and professionals regarding to their experiences at the ALPFA National Convention. I have done some serious persuading to students on a 1:10 basis…just kidding…no I am serious! And it came to my attention that a few students were asking the following questions:
What ALPFA QC get out of this? absolutely nothing! Why ALPFA QC doing this? to encourage everyone to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, which is why the Director of IT (aka me) sacrifices his time (billiards, billiards, and more billiards) to make these synopses more entertaining (at least I think they are…) in order to grab your attention and hopefully persuade you (and you and you) to attend!
If you have any questions, you may comment on this post, and/or contact us by clicking me!
Our next person is:
Debra Lopez
She is a former president for ALPFA QC Chapter, and currently studying for her CPA (good luck!). She is a wonderful person to talk to, and always manage to find the time to help us. Without further ado, let’s give a warm welcome to Debra!
(cheers in the background…)
QC: Hello Debra, so tell us, how did the ALPFA National Convention impact you?
Debra: The ALPFA Convention is the best thing that happened to me in terms of career development. The 2008 and 2009 Conventions helped me develop my networking skills to the maximum-
QC: Hold on, you went to both 2008 and 2009 Conventions! How did you like the 2008 Convention?
Debra: The 2008 National Convention took place in Arizona, I networked so much more than I ever had the opportunity to. The professionals were willing to invest in the future of their companies that I was able to use the great networking skills I gained through ALPFA to get a spot interview with one of the Big Four, which later became an internship.
QC: Now that was a great achievement, and we would like to congratulate you! If any of you envy her, well don’t be, because this opportunity may happen to you! Any last words before we take a break?
Debra: The convention is so resourceful that it gives you the tools to perform a great interview and interact with professionals. I encourage you all to attend the Convention- you will gain a lot of corporate experience! I am off to my full-time position as an auditor with the Big 4- till next time!
QC: On that lovely note, we would like to thank Debra again for taking the time to share her experiences with the ALPFA Conventions. And if you were paying attention, she attended the 2009 Convention despite the fact she had a full-time offer, which goes to prove how rewarding this experience is!
***Stay tuned tomorrow, we will have another candidate speak about his/her experience!***

Weekly Synopses! #1
Hello Viewers,
If you are viewing this page, chances are, you are interested in attending the ALPFA National Convention and would like to get some feedback from professionals and students. Fortunately, we have gathered a list of people who are interested in sharing their experiences, and we are going to post them on this page on a weekly basis! If you have any questions for us and/or one of the people giving their synopsis, please contact us by clicking me!
Our first person is:
Yos Bugallo
She is the Director of Student Programs for the ALPFA NY board, and currently works at Ernst & Young under Campus Inclusiveness Recruiting. She is a friendly person, always excited to see new faces, and of course, interested in knowing what other student chapters are doing…, anyhow, without further ado, we welcome Yos to the stage to talk about her experience at an ALPFA National Convention!!!
(hands clapping in the background…)
QC: Hello Yos, thank you for taking the time to address our curiosities. Due to the lack of time, why don’t we start and end (every ending is just a beginning) with, how you felt about the ALPFA National Convention, and how had it impacted your life?
Yos: As a professional and member of the NY chapter board, attending the ALPFA national convention is the highlight of my year as I get to see my ALPFA familia live and in action. From networking events, to dinners and workshops, I meet new members every time I attend that become an invaluable part of my ALPFA network, and have the opportunity to reconnect with those that have helped me in my own career path. Each year, I walk away inspired to continue the mission of ALPFA, to build connections amongst my own community, and to strive for excellence in my personal and professional life. Perhaps this is what happens when over 2,000 Latino leaders join forces for 4 days…
Another rewarding part of attending the convention is getting to meet our up and coming ALPFA stars – our students! Although the convention culminates in a career fair each year, the true value of the convention comes in learning about the latest topics in the professional workshops, meeting ALPFA members at your target companies, or very simply, meeting individuals that can become your mentors in the years to come.
QC: Wow, now that’s a lot of information to take in, of course, it is recommended to attend this wonderful event instead of listening (reading…) about it. Before we end our conversation, are there any suggestions and/or recommendations for students who are attending for their first time?
Yos: If you decide to attend the convention this year, bring your resume, your notepad, your salsa shoes, and lots of energy!
QC: Thank you so much for your feedback, and your suggestions. We will now postpone the next person so that we have time to buy a pair of salsa shoes… If you have any questions for us and/or Yos, you may do so by posting as well!!!
(Hm…, this will give me an edge for salsa…, but I have no clue how to salsa…)
Stay tuned next week with our next person. Thank you for reading!
